Asia breakthroughs in the world's best university rankings

The top 10 universities ranking the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) last year continued to hold their positions this year, despite some disturbances. .


Shanghai 2016 confirmed that Harvard is the world's No. 1 school. Stanford continued to be No. 2, while the University of California (Berkeley) and Cambridge won the next position.

Eight of the top 10 universities in the US rankings. Only Oxford and Cambridge are two UK schools. Even in the top 20, there is only one university in England: University College London (No. 17), a Swiss university.

ARWU ratings are published annually since 2013 by the Shanghai Ranking Consultancy. This ranking gives another perspective on the world's best universities compared to the Times Higher Education rankings - also one of the most prestigious rankings today.
