ABOUT THE EDUCATION SYSTEM IN GERMANY

STRUCTURE

Germany has over 380 universities located in 175 cities. Every year, over 2 million students pursue 15,000 undergraduate and graduate programs in Germany.

In Germany, bachelor courses last from 6 to 8 terms, depending on the discipline (3 to 4 years), while master courses last from 2 to 4 semesters (1 to 2 years). For PhD programs, as in other countries, the study period may range from 3 to 10 years.

TYPES OF EDUCATION

German education is divided into three different types of universities:

1. Universities (Universitäten)

Universities in Germany offer a wide range of courses spanning almost every field and focus on research and teaching. These schools teach traditionally and have many specialized options.

2. Universities of Applied Sciences (Fachhochschulen)

Universities of Applied Science focus more on practical and applied learning. The students are observed practically and do topics in the business as well as specialized departments.

These schools mainly teach IT (IT), Technology, Business Studies, Social Work, Design, Education, Nursing, Natural Science and Applied.

3. University of Arts, Music and Cinema (Kunst-und Musikhochschulen)

These universities offer independent learning styles that promote innovative approaches to learning and research. When enrolled here, students will probably have to take their aptitude tests in their chosen field.

The subjects here will include all types of art from fine art, fashion design, cinema, musical instruments to graphic design.
